My First Fourteener

On 8/8/12 I climbed my first 14,000+ foot mountain, Handies Peak. Weather stopped me from climbing Mt. Sneffels a day later.
- The trail to Handies Peak starts at the bottom of American Basin
- And continues up from the green on the right, by Sloan Lake in the middle and through the rocky slope on the left
- Then finally up the ridge
- 360 degree panoramic from the top
- I took 3.5 hours to climb, 11,600' to 14,048 '
- Sloan Lake is the halfway point
- The road is a 4-wheel drive road called the Alpine Loop, the highest in the US.
- Garmin Etrex 20 trail
- Garmin Etrex 20 stats, 5.77 miles up and down
- HTC Evo Android phone trail, using BackCountry Navigator PRO. Much nicer!
- Now I'm headed on the Alpine Loop to another 14er
- By way of Box Canyon in Ouray
- Mt. Sneffels in back left
- Mt Sneffels from Wright's Lake
- The road to the trailhead was challenging
- Gilpin Peak across Yankee Basin from the trail head to Mt. Sneffels
- Had to bail on climbing Sneffels, weather quickly moved in, rain and lightening 10 minutes later.
- Trip map, 301 miles
